listen –
tall grass says plenty
in the first snow

Linked to Carpe Diem Haiku Kai, where “miscanthus” (“susuki”) is our inspiration. It is another of the seven sacred flowers of autumn. I found this one much easier to write about – having seen the similar pampas grass around the neighborhood.
For our inspiration we have several haiku by Basho:
lightning—
through the face,
miscanthus plumes
a lovely name—
Little Pine, where the wind wafts
over bush clover and miscanthus
snow falling—
miscanthus for the shrine hut
still uncut
somehow
still alive—snow on
withered miscanthus
by my new banana plant
the first sign of something I loathe—
a miscanthus bud
We also have this haiku by our host Chèvrefeuille:
swaying in the breeze
like waves in the ocean
Miscanthus leaves
I also found this haiku by Yamazaki Sōkan (1458-1546):
anyway
leave it to the wind
dry miscanthus
